What Are AFCI And How Do They Protect You?

AFCI stands for Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter. These devices are designed to detect and interrupt electrical arcing in a circuit, which can be a leading cause of electrical fires. They are typically installed in the main electrical panel, or service panel, of a home or building and are used to protect the branch circuits that supply power to outlets and lights in various rooms.

They can help prevent fires by detecting and interrupting arcing before it can cause damage or ignite nearby materials. If a potential arc fault is detected, the AFCI will trip, or open, the circuit, interrupting the flow of electricity and thus preventing the arc from continuing.
